Ansys Granta- Material data for simulation and product development

Accurate materials data is needed for accurate simulations, good product design and intelligent material selection. The Ansys Granta product series provide reliable materials data but also solutions for fast material screening, early-stage sustainability assessment and managing your own material data.

With you get access to reliable materials data that is useful in both simulation, product design and material selection. The Data cover many different material types such as metal, plastics, composites, and ceramics and in the product with most data there is over 400.000 entries.

Also, all Ansys Granta products is integrated with Ansys solvers like Mechanical, AEDT and Fluent. This means that the data in the databases can be taken easily into Ansys solvers. Many Ansys Granta solutions also offers integration with third party simulation and CAD tools.

However, Ansys Granta products is more than just a database.

With Ansys Granta tools you can perform a streamlined LCA analysis to assess environmental impact early in the design phase. Compare different designs, different materials and different manufacturing methods and gain insight into the environmental impact of your product. Use the insight to help guide design decisions.

You can also perform fast material screening by filtering materials based on their properties. Rule out all the non-useable materials and visualize the performance of the rest of the materials to easily find the materials with the best performance.

Lastly with Ansys Granta it is also possible to combine your own materials data with the Ansys Granta Materials data that will act as the one source of truth for all users. This ensures that the data used is consistent and with one central materials database it is also possible to control data access and traceability of data.

Questions and answers

Question: Is Granta included in all ANSYS licenses, or does it require a separate license?Answer: Granta is a standalone product series, so a separate license is needed. However, for some Granta products having a license will unlock new features in other Ansys software solutions.

Question: Does Granta contain Hyperelastic properties, including Neo-Hookean etc
Answer: For some materials there is hyperelastic material models (Mooney-Rivlin, Ogden and Yeoh). Granta can help you calculate hyperelastic material models from test data and it is also possible to store the data in a central database.

Question: Is all material data “bulk” data i.e. locally varying properties like for case carburized components are not accommodated?
Answer: Most of the data is isotropic bulk data but for some materials you can find anisotropic material properties. For some coating types like a carburization, there is also general information for a such as hardness and maximum coating thickness.

Question: Is it possible to evaluate other environmental impacts in addition to CO2? What impact assessment methods are used in Granta?
Answer: The environmental impacts that can be evaluated with Ansys Granta products is embodied energy and CO2 footprint. In Ansys Granta a simplified Method focusing on 6 different phases is used. Compared to a conventional Life-Cycle assessment, this methodology is much simpler however the simpler methodology is much faster, and it allows for environmental assessment much earlier in the product deployment cycle, and it is therefore possible to use environmental assessment to guide design decisions and material selection.

Question: Do the materials also contain non-linear material data, e.g., plasticity?
Answer: Yes, nonlinear properties like stress-strain curves are included for many materials.
