Hydrogen Engine Simulation with Ansys CFX
A European research project is developing internal combustion engines powered by hydrogen.
The European Commission-funded HyICE project aimed to develop a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine offering competitive power and cost. Coordinated by the BMW Research and Technology Group, the project brought together automotive manufacturers, suppliers and universities to investigate engine technology designed specifically for hydrogen fuel.
Ansys CFX computational fluid dynamics software was used to model cryogenic port injection and high-pressure direct injection. The simulation results closely matched experimental temperature and pressure data, helping accelerate development and establish a validated simulation approach for future hydrogen engine projects.
