CFD Wind Resource Assessment for Complex Terrain

The National Renewable Energy Center of Spain conducted a CFD study to evaluate wind conditions across a mountainous region in Navarre. Using FLUENT and GAMBIT, researchers created a detailed model of the terrain and incorporated customised wind profiles, turbulence conditions and vegetation patterns.

Predictions were validated using one year of data collected from four meteorological masts. CFD produced more accurate wind speed and power density predictions than the simplified wind analysis program, demonstrating its value for wind farm planning in complex terrain, particularly when meteorological measurements are limited
