Turning A New Leaf

Wind Tree Design with Ansys Multiphysics Simulation

New Wind developed a tree-shaped wind power generator designed to bring renewable energy into urban environments. The structure features a steel trunk and branches supporting 63 plastic leaves, which capture wind and generate electricity through individual generators and microcontrollers.

Engineers used Ansys Fluent, Mechanical and Maxwell to address the wind tree’s aerodynamic, structural and electromagnetic challenges. Multiphysics simulation helped optimise the leaves, minimise aerodynamic interference, design the generators and confirm that the plastic leaves and steel structure could withstand expected wind loads.
