BREAKING NEWS: MASTER’S THESIS OPPORTUNITY IN ELECTRICAL SYSTEM DESIGN
Drive the Future of Electrified Aviation with EDRMedeso and GKN Aerospace
Are you ready to take part in shaping the future of sustainable aviation? EDRMedeso, in collaboration with GKN Aerospace, is offering an exciting master’s thesis opportunity focused on electric system design. This is your chance to contribute to the electrification of aircraft and develop cutting-edge technologies that reduce fuel consumption, save weight, and improve overall efficiency.
About the Project
The aviation industry is undergoing a major transformation as it moves toward electrified and hybrid propulsion systems. Electrically driven systems are key to this change, offering high power density, improved energy efficiency, and reduced environmental impact compared to traditional mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic solutions.
In this electric system design master thesis, you will:
– design and compare inverter technologies to evaluate performance in an electric driveline
– use Ansys Maxwell to model the motor and extract key electromagnetic data (torque, voltage, power output, losses etc)
– integrate the motor and inverter designs into a system-level model in Ansys Twin Builder
– analyze and compare performance across speed ranges to determine which inverter achieves higher power density and efficiency.
This thesis provides hands-on experience using industry-leading Ansys simulation tools and an opportunity to collaborate directly with GKN Aerospace engineers and EDRMedeso experts.
Expected Outcomes
You’ll gain valuable experience in simulation-driven design and electric system development while delivering:
– a complete design process in Ansys Maxwell and Twin Builder
– insights into electric driveline architecture at the system level
– technical evaluations covering: switching frequency behavior, quasi-harmonic swing due to overload voltage, transition from linear to non-linear (field weakening) operation, redundancy and system optimization
Project Details
Start Date: Open
Participants: 1-2 MSc. students (preferably in Electrical Engineering)
Supervisor: Björn Bragée, EDRMedeso
Industry Partner: GKN Aerospace
Examiner: TBD
Why Apply?
– collaborate with two leading technology companies: EDRMedeso and GKN Aerospace
– work on a real-world electrification challenge shaping the future of aviation
– build advanced skills in simulation, electric system design, and power electronics
– gain hands-on experience with Ansys tools such as Maxwell, Twin Builder, and Motor-CAD
– make a meaningful contribution to sustainable engineering and green aviation
